Treacle
Difficulty
Devilish
The moody, goth version of golden syrup. Thick, dark, and sticky, with a slightly bitter, almost burnt flavour. Unlike most sweeteners, black treacle is a genuine source of iron and calcium — the minerals that don't get stripped out during the refining process that creates white sugar.
Rich in iron.
Origins
A byproduct of the sugar refining process, treacle became a common sweetener in Britain in the 17th century.
